Local Transportation Projects

The Chamber has been actively engaged in monitoring and speaking as one voice to advocate for Comprehensive Transportation Funding and priority projects.


Route 222 North is our #1 Priority road projects for Berks County.  We are committed to making sure the construction gets completed as 222 North is a critical connector for our region's economic stability, job growth and quality of life. is a public private partnership between the Greater Reading Chamber and the Berks County Commisioners to ensure the Greater Reading community is kept informed during the major bridge construction projects in Reading.

Estimated Bridge Schedules:

  • PA 183 Over Schuylkill River (Schuylkill Avenue Bridge) – restrictions should be removed by  mid 2015
  • Bingaman Street Bridge – PennDOT estimates repairs will be made by about Thanksgiving.  Restrictions will be removed following the repairs.
  • Buttonwood Street Bridge – Estimate bids to be open December, 2014. Actual closure date has not been set at this time.  Anticipate closure in early 2015 and it will remain closed for approximately 2 construction seasons (until late 2016).  When reopened there will be no restrictions on use.
  • Penn Street Bridge – Project is still in design phase.  Anticipate contract to repair structure to begin immediately following reopening of Buttonwood Street Bridge.  The bridge will remain open but there will be lane restrictions and the west-bound ramp from US 422 (West Shore Bypass) will be closed for the duration of the project (estimated 2-3 construction seasons).
