Career Prep Workshop & Career Prep Fair

At the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce & Industry we recognize that our future business leaders and entrepreneurs are learning in the classroom right now. The guidance and tools they receive in school can have a huge impact on their futures. We are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic about making a difference and guiding these young men and women into meaningful careers.

Mission: In an ever-changing job market, Reading High School Principal Eric Turman wants each one of his seniors to graduate with a plan for his or her future. Whether entering the workforce or pursuing post-secondary education, Principal Turman is committed to ensuring that his students leave school with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. The Career Prep Program lays the foundation for strong work ethics as students gain a thorough understanding of employer expectations in order to thrive in competitive job positions. However, the ultimate goal for Principal Turman is not for students to merely land a job, but aspire to a meaningful, fulfilling career, and to appreciate the difference.

Career Prep Fair

April 29, 2015

Unlike a typical career fair, the Career Prep Fair at Reading High School offers seniors the opportunity to inquire about the specifics of a particular career path, while also learning about local opportunities. Students are encouraged to engage with employers as they try different careers on for size. By interacting directly with employers, the seniors leave with a better understanding of how they can best apply their talents and skills to a particular field.

The Career Prep Program is just one initiative of many in Berks that build on business/education partnerships to build a competitive workforce pipeline.  The Chamber’s Workforce Pipeline Career Awareness Task Force brings together committed partners to align community resources including the Berks County Workforce Investment Board (WIB), Greater Reading Economic Partnership (GREP), Berks Business Education Coalition (BBEC), along with Berks County post-secondary institutions, businesses, school districts and other non-profit education initiatives. By sharing and aligning available community resources, the Chamber is able to identify and create initiatives for businesses and educators to work together to tackle both educational and workforce related challenges.
